Was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Officer in the General Division in the 2017 Australia Day honors for distinguished service to the performing arts as a musician, songwriter, author and actor, both nationally and internationally, and as a major contributor to Australian music culture and heritage.

He had twin sons, Arthur Cave and Earl Cave, with his wife Susie Bick. Tragically, his son Arthur died in July 2015 following a fall from a cliff.

He scripted the dark western, The Proposition (2005) and has contributed to over 50 soundtracks including Gas Food Lodging (1992) with fellow rocker J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. .

In film, Nick has starred in two films with Brad Pitt: Johnny Suede (1991) by Tom DiCillo and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007).

His first contribution was in the Marlon Brando film, The Freshman (1990): 'From Her To Eternity'. Nick is also a lyricist and poet.

Shot to fame in the 1980s as head of the band The Birthday Party and climbed to greater prominence in the 1990s with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, where he recorded a duet with Australian superstar Kylie Minogue, "Where The Wild Roses Grow" (1995).
